Now, this 166 Auto Auction, it's got a real history. Started back in the '40s by some guy – nobody remembers his name anymore. Guess he wasn't much of a self-promoter! Anyway, he set up shop right on Highway 166, hence the name. Back then, it was a pretty bare-bones operation. Dirt floors, no running water...you wouldn't believe it.
But then, along comes Melvin Reid in 1950. Melvin was a used car guy, just like me, and he saw potential. He took over the auction, even though it wasn't making much money. Think about it, $5 to $10 a sale? You wouldn't even cover the gas to get there nowadays!
But Melvin, he had a knack for business. He fixed the place up, added a bunch of services, and really put 166 on the map. He even became the head honcho at the National Auto Auction Association and helped give the whole industry a better name. By the time he sold it to Manheim in '88, 166 was a top-notch auction with three lanes and everything a dealer could ask for.
They really went all out in '92 and built a brand new five-lane facility. Then they expanded it again in 2000. But the best part is, in 2011, it went back to local owners who really care about their customers. And that's what it's all about, right?
